How to Start Kendo

Courses information (1)

a. Beginner class

Time:7:30pm-9:00pm (every Monday)
Venue:Function room 2, Wan Chai Queens Elizabeth Stadium, 2/F, 18 Oi Kwan Road, Wanchai
Time:9:00pm-11:00pm (every Wednesday)
Venue:5/F, Dance Room, Smithfield Municipal Services Building, 12K Smithfield, Hong Kong

b. Free Training/Keiko (Participant must be bogu wearer)

Time:9:00pm-11:00pm (every Friday)
Venue:Dancing Room, Island East Sports Centre, 52 Lei King Road, Sai Wan Ho, Hong Kong

c. Kendo Kata/Iaido Free Training (8:30a.m.-9:30a.m.)
   Squad Training (9:30a.m.-11:30a.m.)(For Qualified Persons Only)
   Godou Keiko (11:30a.m.-12:30p.m.)

Time:08:30-12:30 (every Sunday)
Venue:Function room 2, Wan Chai Queens Elizabeth Stadium , 2/F, 18 Oi Kwan Road, Wanchai

(Course b & c  are recommended for qualified members or members with coach referral.) (The venue and training time may vary sometimes, it is roughly mainly in Hong Kong Island. The change of training location and time slot will not be informed personally, thus members need to keep up with the updated training time and venue online regularly.)

2. Membership fee

Entry fee HKD$300 (pay once only)

Annual fee HKD$220 ($110 joined from July)

Monthly fee HKD$ 300 X 3 months (it should be paid by quarterly every time)

Total payment for the new member: HKD$1,420/HKD$1,310 (joined from July)

The membership fee will be charged on a quarterly basis, which are January, April, July, and October. Members, please settle the membership fee on time.

3. Registration

Please send the filled application form and cheque by post or by hand to our office. Parents' signature must be provided if participants aged under 18 years old.

4. Payment method

  1. Participants should deposit the payment in Hong Kong Kendo Association Limited bank account in Hang Seng Bank Limited: 281- 264200-001 while using cash deposit, ATM or online transfer. The receipt should be sent to HKKA by post, e-mail or fax.
  2. The cheque should be crossed and made payable to "Hong Kong Kendo Association Limited” and send it by post or by hand to HKKA office. (Cash is not accepted)

5. Equipment for beginners:

The beginner should wear proper sportswear.
A bamboo sword is required (Members can purchase equipment on their own or ask coaches for any inquiry)

Courses information (2)

KENDO EXPERIENCE CLASS (aged 10 or above till aged below 65) 

Date: 8:00am to 9:30am on Sunday (Due to the temporary closure of the sports centre, the exact dates for the class will be announced later.) 

Venue: No. 1 Dancing Room, Harbour Road Sports Centre, 27 Harbour Road, Wan Chai


Registration fees: HKD$600/person (8 Lessons) *won't charge for membership annual frees; and participants will not be a member of HKKA 
Shinai & shinai bag: $350 *can be waived if you have your own equipment 
Application deadline: till quota is full

Objective: To promote Kendo and Japanese culture to the public and help participants to cultivate agility, dexterity, instant response, endurance and correct posture; to develop habits and patience, nourish, cultivate concentration, decisiveness, and sportsmanship.

Content: Skills demonstration – dojo etiquette and discipline, Shinai (bamboo sword) handling, Kata, kendo movement face, hand, and punch strike practice.

  1. Information should be completely provided.
  2. No refund can be made after the application process.
  3. Participants could consider whether they have to buy insurance if necessary.
  4. Participants must consider whether they have the ability to participate. If necessary, please consult a doctor.
  5. Participants must comply with the coach’s instruction. Otherwise, participates would be refused to participate in the programme and no refund will be arranged.
  6. Classes will continue as usual if Typhoon Signal No. 1/ No. 3, or Amber/ Red Rainstorm Warning Signal is hoisted. When an announcement is made by the Hong Kong Observatory during the following time periods that the Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 8 or above is likely to be issued within the next two hours, classes will be canceled as indicated. No make-up class will be arranged for classes canceled due to bad weather.
